A Baltimore, MD native, Dr. Karl Anthony (Tony) Rose’s journey in the dental field began early. “I was fascinated by the intersection of biological, chemical and medical science,” he says. “Dentistry allowed me to pursue my passion, while working with and helping people.”
Dr. Rose earned his BS in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland, followed by completing his DDS at the same school. After practicing General Dentistry in the United States Air Force, he earned a Certificate of Periodontology from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. While gaining his specialty training, Dr. Rose continued to practice General Dentisty in Philadelphia. In 1980, Dr. Rose moved to Washington DC to accept a faculty position at Georgetown School of Dentistry and to create a private practice of his own - Periodontal & Implant Associates of Greater Washington (PIAGW). “Teaching is a must!” Dr. Rose comments, adding that he considers it his way to give back to his community. He held a faculty appointment at the University of Pennsylvania's Post-Doctoral Residency program for twenty-six years. There, he lectured and clinically trained dentists who became specialists in Periodontics, Periodontal-Prosthodontics & Rehabilitation, and Implants Dentistry. In 2009 he accepted a similar position at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. He has given countless lectures and seminars and taught various courses over the years, both nationally and internationally. He is on the receiving end of continuing education also - attending at least three annual dental conventions each year as well as local and distant courses.
“In my practice, I find examination and consultations to be the most important duties,” says Dr. Rose. “These are often neglected, but it is crucial to perform them thoroughly and well. One cannot treat well if the diagnostic, treatment planning and consultation processes are not diligently performed. I strive to be not just competent, but responsive, responsible and trustworthy!”
When he’s not practicing, teaching or continuing his education, Dr. Rose spends time with his two daughters, Morgan, Rachael and his grandchildren. He also enjoys music (live and recorded), and touring North America by motorcycle. Dr. Rose currently resides in Bethesda, MD.
