LANAP Process in Washington DC, Chevy Chase MD, and Bethesda MD

LANAP is a treatment for periodontal disease that utilizes a specially designed soft-tissue laser to target infection and leave healthy tissue in place allowing the body to heal itself. Washington DC Periodontist Dr. Karl A. Rose uses this innovative process because it's much less painful and heals quicker than the traditional cut and suture surgery, which many periodontists still use today. If you opt for LANAP to repair your gums, the procedure will procede as follows:

Step 1.

Dr. Rose will start by probing your gums to identify where the pockets between your gums and teeth are deepest. Those are the most urgent to treat.

If not replaced, the loss of even one tooth can affect your long-term oral health. Dr. Rose can help you replace and even reverse the effects of missing teeth.

Step 2.

He will then insert a small fiber optic tip under the gum line that will use a laser to destroy bacteria and remove infected tissue.

Step 3.

Next, he uses an ultrasonic scaler and possibly a special hand instrument to remove tartar that was dislodged by the laser.

Step 4.

A second pass with the laser will clot the blood in the pocket. This will aid in proper healing and allow the gums to reattach to the tooth root.

Step 5.

If needed, Dr. Rose will adjust the patient's bite to prevent and/or eliminate bite trauma.

Step 6.

With the infection eliminated and the tooth root clear of debris, connective tissues and bone will regrow, protecting the tooth from future infection and reestablishing a secure bond.

LANAP is currently the most advanced treatment for gum disease available. The procedure uses the PerioLase® laser to treat the delicate gum tissue, the only laser now approved by the FDA for laser gum treatment. Results of LANAP are on par with traditional gum surgery but without any of the extensive cutting or long healing process. This is because it is able to zero in on the infection and deal with it while preserving healthy gum tissue.
